X marks Royal Enfield’s fresh take on the Thunderbird

X marks Royal Enfield’s fresh take on the Thunderbird

For a motorcycle manufacturer that has been producing and selling one and only model for almost six decades, the introduction of two new engine platforms during the last two years – the 2016 LS410 with the Himalayan, and the 650 twins in 2017 – has been nothing short of a roller coaster.

Royal Enfield is introducing a new version of the Thunderbird, featuring a thorough makeover for both the 350 and 500 cc variants of the classic-looking cruiser. The new Thunderbird X sets its sights on the trending factory custom segment, in an apparent effort to appeal to a younger demographic.

Since 1955, the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 and 500 built its own market niche and attracted a loyal global following, mainly due to the fact that it had remained practically unchanged until 1995. Then the Indian company started introducing updates in order to keep up with legal requirements and growing competition, in a gradual process that included moving the gear shifter to the left side, adding electronic ignition and disc brakes, and culminating in the 2007 Unit Construction Engine (UCE) that was still rooted on the original 1955 design but incorporated more modern amenities like electric starter, integrated five-speed gearbox and fuel injection.

Today Royal Enfield supports the standard Bullet with a long list of spinoffs that include eight Classic variants, the Continental GT café racer and, of course, the Thunderbird. The latest addition to this model family is the Thunderbird X, which features no mechanical changes compared to the existing model.

The first new model from Royal Enfield would only arrive in 2002, and it was a cruiser version of the Bullet. In typical style, the Thunderbird didn't get any major updates for another 10 years, until 2012 when it received the UCE engine. By now it was essentially a Bullet with a larger fuel tank, longer front suspension and a styling shift from a 1950s British roadster to an American 1970s cruiser.

The UCE single four-stroke produces 19.8 hp (14.8 kW) and 27.2 hp (20.3 kW) in the 350 and 500 cc versions respectively, tasked with moving a mass of 197 kg (434.3 lb). Frame, suspensions and brakes are the same as the ones used in the standard Thunderbird models.

If the car pictured looks familiar, that’s probably because you saw a strikingly-similar Brabus-tuned E63 S in September. However, unlike that creation which delivered 690 hp, this variant packs 789 hp beneath its skin.

Prior to the Geneva Motor Show kicking off next week, Benz tuning giant Brabus has unveiled its latest upgrade package for the potent Mercedes-AMG E63 S.

Thanks to these considerable increases in horsepower and torque, the Brabus E63 S reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in exactly three seconds. Opt for the E63 S Estate and its 0-62 mph time sits at 3.1 seconds. Top speeds for both body styles sit at an electronically limited 186 hp (300 km/h) but Brabus is currently working on a tweak to bypass the limiter.

To increase grunt by 186 hp over stock, Brabus fitted a pair of new turbochargers and tweaked the vehicle’s computers. Alongside the mighty horsepower figure, torque has also been increased by a considerable 74 lb-ft to a mind-blowing 737 lb-ft at just 3600 rpm.

If the customer so chooses, a stainless steel exhaust system can also be fitted as can a range of customization options for the cabin.

Not satisfied with simply making the E63 S faster and more powerful than standard, Brabus has also designed a number of styling and aerodynamic modifications for the super sedan and estate. Most notably, there is a selection of carbon fiber parts offered in a matte or high-gloss finish. Elsewhere, Brabus offers new alloy wheels for the car that are up to 21-inch in size.

New Hybrid Ford Focus RS Could Be A 400-HP Hot Hatch Hybrid

New Hybrid Ford Focus RS Could Be A 400-HP Hot Hatch Hybrid

The all-new Ford Focus won’t be debuting at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Instead, it will be revealed at a separate event in Europe this April. It makes sense, since the next-gen hatchback will be able to steal the spotlight without having to vie for your attention at a crowded motor show. However, thanks to a leaked photo of the car completely undisguised taken from a photoshoot in Portugal, we already have a good idea of what it will look like. Unfortunately for Ford, new details about the new Focus have also now emerged.

A new report by Dutch site AutoInternationaal claims that the new Focus will be around 50 mm longer than the outgoing model, which will increase rear legroom for passengers. It will also be around 110 pounds lighter, depending on the model variant. The report goes on to say that the dashboard in the new Focus will be more hi-tech and feature less physical buttons in favor of a tablet-centric layout. Most infotainment functions will be controlled using the touchscreen display. The juiciest piece of gossip from the report, however, concerns the new range-topping Focus RS hot hatch.

That would make it it 0.7 seconds quicker off the line than the current Focus RS and slightly faster than the Audi RS3 and the Mercedes-AMG A45. Before the Focus RS arrives, Ford is expected to unveil the new Focus ST, which is rumored for a Paris Auto Show debut in October packing around 280 – 290 hp provided by a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

According to the publication, the next-generation Focus RS will adopt a mild hybrid powertrain, as the Blue Oval company is apparently developing a 48-volt electric system to compete with its rivals. Combined with an integrated starter-generator and an upgraded 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo engine, this setup will reportedly deliver a hefty 400 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of peak torque. Like the current Focus RS, the new model will be offered with a six-speed automatic gearbox. A dual-clutch automatic is also said to be in development. AutoInternationaal claims the hybrid powertrain will enable the new Focus RS to hit 0-62 mph in just four seconds.

'Roxor' Mahindra unveils new off-road vehicle in the US

'Roxor' Mahindra unveils new off-road vehicle in the US

Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) on Saturday held the public unveiling of ROXOR, a new off-road vehicle for the other international markets.
The new off-roader creates a new sub-category in the side-by-side Powersports segment and Mahindra has also launched a new Powersports dealer network for its distribution in North America.

The Roxor signifies Mahindra’s commitment to introducing its tough, no-nonsense automotive heritage to the consumers in the North American market, the company said in a statement.

Unlike the plastic-bodied, belt-driven vehicles long accepted in the side-by-side category, Roxor offers a simple, hard-worn approach, featuring a steel body on a boxed steel frame. Moreover, a heavy-duty Mahindra turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine -- mated to an automotive style five-speed manual transmission -- propels the tough off-roader.

The design of the vehicle demonstrates that Mahindra intends to stay true to its roots of industrial-grade construction and durability that began 70-years ago with a license to build Willys vehicles for the Asia region.

The Roxor signifies Mahindra’s commitment to introducing its tough, no-nonsense automotive heritage to the consumers in the North American market, the company said in a statement.

Speaking at the launch Rick Haas, President and CEO - Mahindra Automotive North America said that the response for the Roxor from the company's newly appointed dealer body has been really outstanding.

“Mahindra’s 70-year automotive history has been forged by making authentic, rugged, purpose-driven vehicles; ROXOR is the embodiment of this history and our brand,” Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said while unveiling of the Roxor.
